Fasnacht Diary 2010 – Cortege and Monday Evening

It is Tuesday morning and I am nursing a small hangover. My son has gone to Kinderkrippe and insisted on wearing his Waggis costume. As it is raining today my wife wanted to put a coat on him – but he kept saying that Waggis don’t wear coats. Finally we were able to get him to wear one of those transparent rainproof ponchos. Recalling all of yesterday is a bit of an effort I have to admit.

During Morgenstraich, the strap on my handbag broke; so instead of having a doze when I got home, it was down to Manor to get a new bag. Shopping on Morgenstraich day is relatively stress free – especially when you are in a clown costume.

After Manor it was time to get my Cortége costume on and after lunch at the restaurant Rebhaus the clique gathered on Claragraben to get ready to march across Wettsteinbrücke past the Comité.

This year’s sujet is:

Mir Pfyffe druff!
Und hinde wird derzue drummlet.

The sujet was a long list of all the irritations that have happened this year including the “Gadaffi Theatre”, the Bankers, the constant building works, the minarettes vote, crime etc etc. We were dressed as birds (whistling about the irritations).

We had various stops near Munsterplatz, then Barfüsserplatz and on Gerbergasse outside the Safranzünft where my wife and son were waiting. My son was looking very proud in his Waggis costume and was enjoying getting sweets from the Waggis in the Cortége.

Some of the costumes this year were very elaborate. There was one clique all dressed as giant trousers while anothere were fly agaric mushrooms. I have no idea what the sujets behind the costumes were. I will have to try and look for the Ladaarne on Munsterplatz today.

At Marktplatz we met up with the Alte vo d’r Märtplatz clique and marched with them to the Löwenzorn where we had dinner with them. After that it was back on the streets and down to the Barbarakeller where we parted the ways with the Alte. The Runzle then wound through the “Gassli” to Schifflände and after drink it was back to the Löwenzorn for a nightcap.

I staggered home at about 10:30am and many cliques and Gugge were still going strong long into the night.

Tuesday morning it is torrential rain and looking at the weather prediction it does not show much sign of abating. Let us pray that it does.
