Growing Up
October 19th, 2009Yesterday my wife told me she had packed away the baby bottles that we had on the shelf in the kitchen. Our little one is nearly two and a half and he drinks perfectly well out of a glass.
Also in the last week we removed the sides from his cot to convert it to a normal bed, and following a fall on Tuesday where a couple of teeth were loosened we were told that the dummy would have to go while the teeth re-set themselves.
I think the dummy was the most difficult change for J. to come to terms with - but he now manages without it fairly well.
Such events brought home to me that he is growing up rapidly and while that is a source of pride as a parent, it is coupled with a sadness that he has passed some milestones and there are things we will never experience again.
It barely seems like yesterday that I was holding a helpless bundle in the maternity unit and waiting for his eyes to open for the first time and today we have this walking, talking little man who wants to do everything for himself and is learning all the time.
I look forward to the time when he will go to school, learn to read, when we can play with a train set together and before we know it the teen years will be beckoning. On the other hand I wish he could be a baby that little bit longer.

Making Friends Abroad
May 14th, 2009One of the topics that comes around again and again on Switzerland-based expat fora is along the lines of “how quickly can I make friends in Switzerland”.
Here’s my £0.02 on the subject…..
